Weekend break

Sensing our impending divorce, my mother offered to watch Sadie this weekend so we could have couple time. So much of our time lately has been spent apart or arguing when we are together. We really needed this time.
On Friday night we went to the movies and saw Black Swan. We had a good time although the movie wasn't as dark as I'd thought it would be. Coincidentally my cousin saw it that night as well and to quote her: "I'm not sure if I liked it or if I hated it". Yep.
My mom watched Sadie again on Sunday so we could go shopping in the states. We'd been itching to go but I wasn't comfortable taking Sadie in the so-so weather.
The trip there was a bit blizzard like but it was helpful because we ended up at the Niagara Fashion Outlets. We hadn't been there in years and were surprised by how many stores we were interested in. We ended up buying Sadie 4 pairs of shoes for $40. A great deal considering 3 pairs were Stride Rite brand which are about $40 each pair in Canada. We went with size 5 (current size), 2 pairs of 5.5 and a pair of size 6. The Stride Rite are all lace up since Sadie is able to escape straps, buckles and Velcro. She wore the first pair yesterday and didn't pull them off once! It's amazing how well she's able to walk in them.
D had to be pulled away from the Kate Spade and Coach stores. Both had amazing sales but right now we can't justifying spending money on purses. Did I mention that my step-mother bought us fake Coach bags for Christmas? I'm not petty so I won't comment about how tacky that is.
Afterward we headed out to our original destination for lunch and some more shopping. We had a fantastic meal at The Cheesecake Factory (as we usually do) and left with Cheesecake to go. Yum.
We stopped by Target and Toys R Us on the way home. Target really disapointed us. Sadie scored some Little People (more Noah's animals) at TRU which are not available at home. She loves her Arc! She also got an adorable toddler handbag from Baby Gap.
Seriously, she wasn't even with us but everything was abou her. It was a great time and we hope to arrange some more child free adventures. We're lucky to have my mom.

As dressed by Granny...

I never really know what Sadie's going to be wearing at the end of the day. For Granny, warm is most important. Pink and red together are OK. So are Christmas tops in January. Today Sadie "insisted" on wearing the new hat and mittens that Granny bought and this is what I came home to:

(Already cranky and yelling at me)

Food help, please?

My mom gave Sadie Kraft Dinner (Kraft Mac N Cheese) for lunch yesterday. Not cool. I would prefer my daughter stay away from the fluorescent orange food groups.

That said, it’s kinda my fault. We haven’t really provided a lot of options or told my mom what to feed her. My mom knew I’d be angry and said that she’d meant to “hide the box”. In a really messed up way I feel better knowing that she was being deceptive (Granny felt bad for Sadie eating the same things over and over, gave her a treat) vs. poor judgement (Kraft Dinner is an actual food option for a toddler).

I think that we have rotated through enough of the same foods and are at a point where I need to figure out a meal plan. The problem is compounded by the fact that we do not have a routine for cooking at all, not even for us. Since Sadie has been born our trips to the grocery store have turned chaotic and unplanned. D, the primary food preparer, is home later now that she’s commuting and that leaves dinner up to me and I can’t cook (let alone cook and watch Sadie). Therefore we eat out and order in A LOT and we’re not feeding that crap to Sadie as leftovers.

Right now Sadie eats a variety of steamed veggies, fresh fruit, yogurt, pasta and tomato sauce, meat ravioli (not canned), eggs (including omlets), bread products (mostly with cream cheese, sometimes grilled cheese), meatballs (extra lean turkey, chicken and beef), chicken breast, turkey breast, perogies, and brown/white rice.

I’ve been looking online for sample day care menus and to be perfectly honest some of them are SCARY. Would anyone like to share a quick toddler meal idea with us? We need help!

First week and weekend back to work

My first week back to work was both easier and harder than I’d expected it to be. Sadie seems to be adjusting well during the day but when I get home she is constantly crying and throwing tantrums. My mother has been quick to say that behaviour like that is reserved for the parents and that Sadie listens during the day. I believe it because when Granny comes up Sadie turns into a little angel!
Her tantrums are getting intense and over silly things. She threw a fit when I replaced the door on her Little People house. I guess she wanted to chew on it but how was I supposed to know? Another fit over the TV remote, the baby gate being closed, crying because she fell (multiple times), a fit over my iPhone and the list goes on. It was a tiring few nights and D was working late so I was on my own for several hours since I get home at 3:30.
When the weekend finally came, all of the fun things we used to do during the week were crammed into just 3 days.
On Saturday we had a trial class at The Little Gym. Since I’m back at work ($$) and Sadie is walking, I figured we’d give it a shot. Overall I was extremely impressed. I loved how the kids were encouraged to wander and explore. Sadie had a lot of fun walking back and forth between the parallel bars about 50 times; she learned how to do a somersault (with help from Momma) and burned a lot of excess energy. I was originally going to try out a Kindermusik class and decided between the two but I knew immediately that this was the right program for our active toddler. Sadie is therefore signed up for the winter session! It’s expensive but after trying numerous library and parks and rec programs (cheap or free) I can say with confidence that the money spent on this is worth it.
After The Little Gym we had a play date with my cousin and her son. There were many tears as the kids crashed through the living room falling all over each other. Two unstable 1 year olds let loose together? Bad idea! Sadie ended up with a goose egg on the back of her head after R tumbled on top of her and into a baby gate. R liked to throw blocks, Sadie liked to steal toys from him and Momma just wanted a nap! The only good news out of all of that was that Sadie was zonked that night. She slept until 9:45 am on Sunday! Holy cow!
Sunday got off to a late start. We headed out to an indoor gym that I had wanted to try out. Sadie had a blast going down the slides and running around. I wasn’t necessarily thrilled with the place because it was mostly a bunch of toys but it was a fun outing. Afterward we ran some errands and brought a very crank baby home.
I was off on Monday as part of my return to work plan. I was hoping to take Monday from now until May to use up vacation from last year but things are not going very well with that right now. My vacation days are messed up and I’m having a hard time correcting them. Try being off an entire year and then arguing vacation with your manager. I feel like a total a** and although I’ve earned the days I know it’s annoying that I want to take them. ANYWAY – We had library time in the morning and a play date in the afternoon. Another busy day! The library program was OK but the teacher was a real odd ball. The good news was that I thought it would be someone else who was really flakey so I was pleased to see this new woman. The odd news was that she was weird too. She started the class by saying that one of the rules was to have your child sit with you during the circle portion of the class. She said that we had to sing and clap along, etc. and our children would be engaged and not want to wander. YEAH RIGHT!! I spent most of the class trying to wrestle Sadie into my lap!! After the circle time it was craft time. We were instructed to let our child do the craft since we do not need to hang our own artwork on the fridge. DOUBLE YEAH RIGHT. I’m sure Sadie would have had oodles of fun eating the “lick and stick” stickers, the glue sticks and the GLITTER. Oy Vey! She’s one!!
At this point I’ll say that if anyone was jealous reading that I got to sleep in until 9:45 am Sunday you should know that Sunday and Monday nights were hell. I was up almost the entire night, both nights, dealing with a cranky, crying baby. I’m not sure if she was overtired, teething, having whole milk toots or if she’s experiencing attachment issues but she was moody. She hugged my neck and twirled my hair between her fingers and wouldn’t let go. Every time her soother fell out she’d cry. I’d stick her soother back in and hug her tight and she’d go back to sleep. Repeat this ALL NIGHT LONG. I’m so tired!! Add to that her typical middle of the night bottle where she held onto me so tight you would think I was dangling her over a canyon or something. What’s up with that? Another really odd thing is that *I* woke up sucking my thumb!! WTH?? I was a late thumb sucker but I haven’t done it in over 20 years!! So strange!! I think we’re a bit out of sync even if it doesn’t really appear that way!

That other first I don't want to talk about

I went back to work today and had to suffer through an entire day of: "OMG, you're back already?", "How does it feel to be back?" and "Is today your first day back? Blehhhhh
I have a new desk and it's a bit better than my old one although I'm sitting beside my director, in front of an entrance door and across from the kitchen. The good quality is that there is more privacy than I had before. Privacy is awesome.
So far I've spent the day reading about system changes and I suppose tomorrow I may actually get down to doing some work.
I guess overall it was fine. No tears, other than Sadie's when granny left at the end of the day. That made me feel totally awesome. ):

Sadie's First Birthday - Part TWO

This is the part where our daughter, who was spoiled 5 days earlier by Christmas, opens even more presents and eats cake.

My original entry which took about an hour was just deleted by blogger - I have no idea where it went. Anyway - a picture heavy version of the original because I'm not writing it again!

In summary, we had a family dinner (Momma, Mommy, Granny and Sadie) and opened presents on the 31st. On the 30th we were still in Toronto and Sadie had her 12 month appointment (needles). Poor thing wasn't up for a party after that!

The balloons:

The Cake:

Sadie has really taken to sticking out her tongue when she is concentrating!

The presents:

There's the tongue again!

What a very lucky Birthday Girl!!

Sadie's First Birthday - PART ONE

To celebrate Sadie's first birthday we packed our bags and drove to Toronto to spend the night at the Sheraton Centre Hotel. We'd always wanted to stay at this hotel while living in the city but who pays for a hotel in a city they live in?
The hotel was as great as we'd expected it to be. The lobby was huge and busy yet we were able to quickly check in, hours early. They even gave Sadie a cute stuffed cat hand puppet which was an unexpected surprise!

We were quickly off to Rogers Centre to take Sadie to see the noon showing of Disney on Ice!

The Birthday Girl:
It's Mickey Mouse!!
Disney Friends:
She Loved it!!:
We knew it was a bit risky taking her to a show so young but we'd already taken her to a Raptors game and she'd loved that. I got a little bit teary eyed watching her as the characters came pouring out onto the ice. She was so excited! She had a really good time and I'm so glad we decided to go. Since Disney on Ice is normally in Toronto at this time of year we will likely make this trip a birthday tradition (until she's too old for it).

After the show we went to lunch at Sadie's new favourite restaurant and the restaurant I craved like a mad woman when I was pregnant: East Side Marios!

Enjoying a Birthday ice cream cone:
Uh Oh!:
I liked the cone better anyway:
After lunch we went back to the hotel where Sadie played a bit until we went swimming.

Playing on the bed (Check out her special Birthday tights for Disney On Ice!):

View from our Hotel Room (we had a similar but smaller/different angle view from our Hospital room last year):

Swimming:
Why did I ever want to swim OUTSIDE in the cold of winter? It was seriously COLD out there! D enjoyed it but I didn't! Sadie stayed inside in the warm!!

We wrapped up our evening with some snacks in the room (we'd had a huge lunch) and put Sadie to bed. D and I stayed up and watched Tangled (Disney movie) on the Hotel TV. I love watching "still in theatre" movies in hotels! We'd wanted to see Tangled so we were really happy it was an option.

More Birthday fun to come in another post!! To Be Continued...
