Decisions, decisions... I went to my doctor to get an OB referral. I found out that I will not be transferred to OB care until 20-27 weeks. Until then I will be treated by my GP. That was a bit shocking but I love my doctor so I'm not upset by it. She also seems excited to treat me.My next appointment is on May 12th for a prenatal physical. She said it wasn’t necessary in my case but it was a mandatory step. She’ll also send in my referral at that appointment.
Now, we have a problem. The OB my Dr. has recommended is at the one hospital in all of Toronto I did not want to give birth at. Crap..
I was given the option to do research and make my own decision. My apprehension about this hospital was based on hearing more than one first hand account of discrimination towards same-sex families. Not to mention I was there once and it was gross. I told my doctor my concern about discrimination and she assured me the Doctor she suggested would be fine because he’s gay. We are part of an LGBT medical program so she is probably right. There is no way they would be affiliated with a hospital that would treat us poorly.
I decided to give this guy and the dirty hospital a chance so I looked him up at RateMDS. Here was the comment that stuck out most:
He has great attitude and is very courteous. The only problem is that after more than 5 meetings, I don't feel like I know him or like he knows me. I'm usually in and out within 3 minutes, I struggle to "catch" the stats such as baby's heart rate etc while nurse is dictating them to him.... I'm not really told anything about anything, just measured and told when to come next. Everything is very rushed, and for somebody who is first time pregnant, this may not be the best thing.
My other option is a hospital that is also close to where I live. It seems to have a better reputation on so many levels. This really seems like a no brainer. Yes, I feel bad for not going with the OB I have been recommended but I doubt I’ll regret this (at least based on the hospital program). Here is a description of both programs:
Hospital 1 and
Hospital 2. Can you guess which one I’m going with? Btw, I did discuss using a midwife and my doctor said she is concerned because of my blood pressure issues. She thinks I would be better off with an OB.
In other news, I have not yet had my first u/s. It hasn’t even been booked. I’ll be going in on Friday to buy more progesterone so I’ll mention it to the nurse when I see her. I thought I’d have it this week (before 6 weeks) or maybe next week but I’m not pushing for it. I’m not sure how many u/s I’ll get and I’d really like to see as much as I can.
As far as the pregnancy goes, I’m not feeling pregnant at all!! That may be a bit of a lie but it certainly hasn’t been anything like I thought it would be. I have read so many accounts of people who POAS and suddenly have a bunch of symptoms. It hasn’t been like that at all. I’m having some food issues such as an extremely decreased appetite but no nausea. I go between not wanting to eat at all and complete starvation. Sweet foods are unappealing and I’ve had an increased desire for Mexican Food. This has lead to consuming many tacos, burritos and fajitas. My step-mom says that craving salty means I’m having a boy. We’ll see about that!! Apparently I have to wait until 27 weeks to find out… that seems like FOREVER. It’s crazy how time flies when you’re TTC yet now time is going so slowwww.
